Sharon Lou (Smith) Smetana, 83, of Brookline, New Hampshire, passed away peacefully on Monday, July 13, 2026 at Bedford Hills Center.

Born on May 19, 1943, in Victor, New York, Sharon spent most of her life in Merrimack, New Hampshire, where she and her husband, Gary, raised their family. To countless neighborhood kids, the Smetana home was more than just a house—it was a safe place, filled with laughter, warmth, and the smell of fresh-baked cookies. Sharon had a gift for making everyone feel welcome. She loved sitting and chatting with her children's friends, treating each one like part of the family. Her kindness and generous spirit left a lasting impression on all who knew her.

Sharon graduated with an education degree from SUNY-Pottsdam. She began her career as a school teacher but chose to dedicate herself to raising her three children, a role she considered her greatest privilege. Later, she continued her love of education by volunteering as a teacher's aide in the Nashua School District, where she enjoyed helping students learn and grow.

She found joy in the beauty of everyday life. Sharon loved flowers and birdwatching, and she had a special place in her heart for animals, especially her beloved cats and dogs.  Some of Sharon's favorite memories are jet skiing on Lake Winnipesaukee during family summer vacations, taking her dog for long walks, or baking cookies for family and friends. Her gentle nature and caring heart were evident in everything she did.

Sharon was the beloved wife of Gary M. Smetana. She is survived by her loving husband (of 60 years on 7/2/2026) ; her sons, Craig Smetana and Brian Smetana; her daughter, Rachel Delois, and her husband, Matt Delois; her cherished granddaughter, Alexandra Smetana; and her brother, Lane Smith, and his wife, Cheryl. She also leaves behind many extended family members, lifelong friends, and generations of neighbourhood "kids" whose lives were made brighter by her kindness.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Sandra.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the nurses and staff at Bedford Hills Center for the love, compassion, and exceptional care they gave Sharon throughout the past year. Their kindness brought comfort not only to Sharon, but to her entire family, and their support will never be forgotten.

In accordance with Sharon's wishes, she will be cremated, and a private graveside service will be held for her immediate family. Sharon's legacy is one of unconditional love, generosity, and quiet compassion. She created a home where everyone felt accepted, cared for, and loved. Whether you were family, a friend, or simply stopped by for a visit, Sharon made you feel like you belonged. Her warmth will live on in the countless lives she touched, and she will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
