Sally L. Long

Sally Louise (Spooner) Long, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on December 23, 2025 at Elliot Hospital surrounded by family. She was 86 years old.

Born on July 30, 1939 in Nashua, NH, Sally was a resident of Amherst her whole life. She married the love of her life, Bill, in 1957, with whom she shared 59 happy years with before his passing in 2016. She was the devoted mother of two daughters: Roberta, who preceded her in death in 2018 after a courageous battle with cancer, and Susan, for whom she was a lifelong advocate and companion.

A pillar to the Amherst community, Sally served as an admired crossing guard who saw every student as one of her own kids. She drove school buses for the town of Amherst and made lasting friendships with her coworkers. She also spent 38 years employed by the Amherst Police Department, retiring during Covid with a parade of police and fire trucks.

In the 1970s, she helped launch Opportunity Networks that opened doors and provided support for individuals with disabilities. She found great pride in her volunteer work for the Milford Area Special Needs group. She enjoyed planning parties, fundraisers, and outings right up to her last days.

Her family and friends will remember her cookies and pies, coffee dates at Moulton’s, breakfast outings on the Milford oval, and her love for the beach.

Sally was predeceased by her husband, William, and her daughter and son-in-law, Roberta and Seth Potter. Sally leaves behind her cherished daughter, Susan Long, of Bedford, her granddaughter, Cassandra Hujsak, of Amherst, her granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Amanda and Sean Tully of Beverly, MA, and her great-grandchildren, Hayden, Annora, Lauren and Benjamin. She also leaves behind many treasured friends whose lives were made brighter by her loyalty and love.

Family and friends are invited to a Celebration of Life on December 30, 2025 from 3pm-5pm at the American Legion, 15 Cottage Street, Milford, NH.
