Maurice Edwin “Jake” Young, 92, resident of Amherst, NH, died on May 29, 2016 at his home. He was born at home on Cochran Hill in New Boston, NH to John Albert Young and Maysie T. (Horton) Young on February 22, 1924. Jake moved to Amherst at age 5 in a horse and wagon from New Boston along his father’s trap line down through Straddlepole (Joe English Reservation). He was a WWII veteran having served in the Army Air Forces. He took part in the campaigns of Rome-Arno, Normandy, Northern and Southern France, North Apennines, Rhineland, Po Valley and air combat in the Balkans. Jake had worked as a lumberjack, a licensed hunting guide and later was a land developer. He was predeceased by his wife, Virginia M. (Sweet) Young, who died in 2005; and a son, Stephen W. Young, who died in 2006. Family members include his daughter, Susan J. Young Checani and her husband, Craig W. Checani of Mont Vernon, NH; a son, Kenneth J. Young of Greenfield, NH; three grandchildren, Michael J. Checani of Amherst, NH, Samantha M. Blaisdell and her husband, Brian of Dedham, MA, and Jake A. Checani of RI; many nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held on Monday, June 20th at 3:00 pm in Meadowview Cemetery, Foundry Street, Amherst, NH.
