Obituary for Martha M. Scott

TEMPLE ----- Martha M. Scott, age 89, passed away November 16, 2018, at RiverMead following a lengthy struggle with age-related disease. Born in Philadelphia on December 22, 1928, the second daughter of German immigrants Erwin and Martha (Jahn) Michelfelder, Martha graduated Olney High School, Philadelphia, Pa, Greenbrier College, Lewisburg, West Virginia, and Wittenberg University, Springfield Ohio, 1950, earning a Bachelor of Arts in English. Kenneth Scott of Dayton, Ohio, also a graduate of Wittenberg, won her hand in marriage in September 1950. Martha gave birth to two sons, Mark C. (1951) and Wynn T. (1955) to whom she was an exemplary mother.

Following the career path of her corporate attorney husband, Martha and family relocated to Wayland, Massachusetts in 1957 and later to her beloved home in Temple, New Hampshire, arriving August, 1962. A devoted homemaker, Martha set about restoring and redecorating her historic 1789 Felt-Tobey house, where she would conduct numerous social gathering, perhaps the most memorable of which were her “Yankee Swap” Christmas celebrations. Apart from her domestic endeavors, Martha’s life was distinguished by her energetic civic accomplishments. She was a fifty year member and financial supporter of the Peterborough Unitarian Church, President of the Peterborough League of Women Voters, 1969-1971, Treasurer of Temple’s Mansfield Public Library, 1971-1981, and held numerous board positions in local civic and charitable organizations.

Martha was employed as an admissions counselor and subsequently Director of Development at Franklin Pierce College, 1976-1986. More recently, she served as Co-President of the Friends of the Temple Town Hall, 2005-2006, during which her prowess as a fundraiser was instrumental in transforming the declining Miller Grange building into the current restored Town Hall.

She was pre-deceased by her son Wynn T. Scott (1999) and former husband Kenneth (2014).

Martha is survived by her sister Harriet M. Holt, Lynnfield, Massachusetts and her son Mark C. Scott, Boyertown, Pennsylvania and grandchildren Gunnar Scott and Allison (Scott) Fick as well as four great grand-children.
