Louis L. Murray Sr.

Louis L Murray, of Amherst, NH, the former Executive Vice President of Indian Head National Bank, died on October 7th after a period of declining health. He was 80. Louis L. Murray, was born in Springfield, Mass, on October 27, 1932, to Walter J. Murray and Helena (Gilgan) Murray. He was the fourth of eight children, growing up in Grafton MA. After graduating from St. Stephen’s High School in Worcester, MA, Mr. Murray enlisted in the United States Air Force, serving as a combat medic in Japan, during the Korean War. Upon his return from Japan, Mr. Murray attended Bryant College studying finance and economics, which prepared him for his 40 year career in commercial banking. Mr. Murray served in various positions in consumer finance and commercial lending prior to joining Indian Head National Bank in Nashua in 1972. Mr. Murray was part of a management team which grew Indian Head from a southern NH bank, to a statewide banking institution prior to being acquired by Fleet Financial in the 1988. Mr. Murray was noted expert on consumer banking and commercial lending laws and served with the New Hampshire State Banking Commission in the late 1970’s during the revision of the State Banking Regulations. After his retirement, Mr. Murray volunteered for many years as a Consumer Advocate with the Consumer Protection division of the New Hampshire Attorney General’s office. Mr. Murray was also very active in numerous charitable organizations including the United Way, Bishop Guertin High School Bingo Committee and served as a long time lector, Parish Council President, and Building Committee chairman at St. Patrick’s Church in Milford, NH. He was member of American Legion Post 92, Grafton, MA. Mr. Murray was pre-deceased by wife Mary (Doherty), and two sisters, Rose I. Murray, and Margaret McGarry. He is survived his children, Louis L. Murray Jr. of West Roxbury, MA and Amherst, NH, Patrick J. Murray and his wife Janice of Fairfax, VA, Ellen T. McNally, and her husband Peter of Quincy, MA, Michael F. Murray and his wife Karen of Bayville, NY, and Stephen A. Murray, of Lancaster, NH, and by sisters Helena Gallerani, of Dennis, MA, Genevieve Mahassel of Grafton, MA, Francis Maino, of Worcester, MA, Theresa Deiana of Pocasset, MA, and a brother, Walter J. Murray Jr., of Buford, GA. Mr. Murray leaves nine grandchildren whom he loved dearly, Mary Kate, Meghan, Siobhan, Mollie, Kathleen, Brendan, Mary Margaret, Kevin and Teresa. Calling hours are on Friday, October 11th from 2-4 & 6-8 pm in the Smith & Heald Funeral Home, 63 Elm Street, Milford, NH. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday at 10:00 am in St. Patrick Church, 34 Amherst Street, Milford, NH. Burial with military honors will follow in St. Patrick Cemetery, Amherst, NH.
