James G. Martin, 76, resident of Milford, NH died on May 8, 2017 at his home. He was born in Worcester, MA on September 28, 1940, a son of Joseph and Stephanie (Mertzic) Martin. He was raised and educated in Barre, MA and graduated from Barre High School, Class of 1958. Jim earned his undergraduate degree from College of the Holy Cross, Worcester, MA, his master’s degree from Boston College, and his PhD from Purdue University. Jim made his home in Milford since 1973 and had worked as a Guidance Counselor at Milford High School and Hollis/Brookline High School. In addition, Jim had had also been employed by the State of New Hampshire Department of Education, Bureau of Services for Blind and Visually Impaired in Nashua. Jim was a board member of Opportunity Networks, Amherst and New England Handicapped Sports Association. He was a devout Catholic and active parishioner of St. Patrick’s Church in Milford, where he had served on several committees. In addition, he was a member of Milford Council Knights of Columbus #3035. Jim enjoyed cooking, woodworking, skiing, telling bad jokes and loved all of the Boston sports teams, especially the Red Sox. Jim was predeceased by his loving wife, Judith A. McCarthy. Family members include two sons, Patrick J. McCarthy-Martin and his fiancée, Elizabeth A. Berk of Manchester, NH, and Jeremiah P. Martin and his wife Jessica of Litchfield, NH a granddaughter, Megan Martin; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert and Karen Martin of Leominster, MA, Ronald Martin of Leominster, MA, Francis and Shirley Martin of Worcester, MA several nieces and nephews. Calling hours are Wednesday evening, May 10th from 6:00-8:00 p.m. in the Smith & Heald Funeral Home, 63 Elm Street, Milford. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Thursday at 11:00 a.m. in St. Patrick’s Church, 34 Amherst Street, Milford. Burial will follow in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Amherst.
