Florence L. MacKay, 82, of Pittsfield, NH died on April 24th at Presidential Oaks, Concord, NH of complications from Alzheimer’s disease.
Floss was born in Pittsfield on January 31, 1941, daughter of Eugene H. and Ruth (Garland) Philbrick. She graduated from Pittsfield High School in 1959.
Floss married the love of her life, Bill, in 1962 and they lived happily in Merrimack and Bedford for 51 years until his death in 2014. They enjoyed traveling together, often on cruises, with trips to Alaska, Hawaii, Bermuda, Costa Rica, Puerto Rico, Canada and through the Panama Canal. Floss loved reading, watching NASCAR, and spoiling her cats. She spent many hours tending to her gardens, and delighted in feeding the birds and critters who frequented her backyard. One of the great joys of her life was getting the opportunity to own a horse, Monadnock Dusty, and she loved riding him almost as much as she loved brushing his beautiful long mane.
She worked at Indian Head Bank in Nashua for 27 years, working her way up from the steno pool in 1963, eventually becoming Student Loan Officer and managing a staff that handled all the bank’s student loans. Floss then spent several years working for NH Higher Education Assistance Foundation where she continued her work as a Student Loan Administrator until her retirement in 2001.
Family members include her brother and sister-in-law, Gene and Ann Philbrick of Center Barnstead; sister-in-law Dottie Philbrick of Florida, sister-in-law Mary Ann MacKay of Milford, brother- and sister-in-law John and Nancy MacKay of Nashua; and lots of nieces and nephews who Floss loved dearly, and who will no doubt remember her for her quick wit, her impish sense of humor, and the birthday card that never failed to arrive. Some of us will try to recreate her Cheese Pound Cake recipe but will agree that it’s not as good as when she made it every Christmas.
Floss was pre-deceased by her husband William MacKay, her brother Gary Philbrick of Florida, her brother-in-law Daniel MacKay of Milford, and her nephew David MacKay of Nashua.
Floss’s family would like to thank the wonderful and caring folks at Vintage Hill Assisted Living in Pittsfield, NH, where Floss lived for the last 4 years.
There she was cared for as family, and we are very grateful.
