Obituary for Craig Donoghue of Florida

Craig Warren Donoghue, 57, passed away unexpectedly on October 28, 2019. Craig was a citizen of the world, most recently spending time in Merrimack, NH with his beloved wife of 31 years, Sue Utschinski Donoghue. Craig is also survived by his mother and step father, Patricia and Werner Schmidt, of Germantown, TN and innumerable family and friends who are so deeply saddened by his absence.

Craig grew up in Westford, MA. He learned his love of the sea as a young boy sailing in Boston Harbor with his grandfather, uncles, and cousins. He left for the mountains of the Wyoming as a very young man on the first of many adventures during his life. He met his soulmate, Sue, not long after while in Utah. Craig and Sue would remain inseparable for the rest of his days.

Craig would be forever drawn to the majesty of the sea and the mountains. He lived his life big, like the sea and the mountains he loved. Craig wanted to experience everything he could in life and was always planning for his next big adventure. Most recently he was researching and dreaming of thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail.

Craig completed his bachelor’s degree in computer science at Weber State University in Utah, but was truly a lifelong learner. As a voracious reader, he was self-schooled in a vast number of subjects. That schooling provided him with all he needed to be a master conversationalist. He could talk to anyone at any time about any subject. As such, he made strong connections with many.

Always together in retirement for the past 12 years, Craig and Sue lived on and sailed the Atlantic Ocean, camped in their RV, hiked portions of the Appalachian Trail and genuinely cherished their time with extended family and friends in Minnesota, New England, Wisconsin, Florida, and Tennessee. Craig also loved the freedom he found in taking long road trips on his scooter, solo or with others, on back roads up and down the east coast and across the country.

Craig took the time to nurture meaningful relationships with the young people in his life. He listened with genuine interest to whatever his many cousins, nieces and nephews had going on in their worlds. He was a true friend, helper, pen pal and advisor to them all.

A service in celebration of Craig’s life will be held on December 14, 2019 at Smith & Heald Funeral Home in Milford, NH with visitation at 12:30 and service at 1:00, followed by a luncheon at the Birches function room on Summit Road in Merrimack, NH. In lieu of flowers, donations in Craig’s memory can be made to American Foundation for Suicide Prevention at afsp.org.
